Odd things, like a button drawer. Mean
Things, fishhooks, barbs in your hand.
But marbles too. A genuis for being agreeable.
Junkyard crucifixes, voluptuous
discard. Space for knickknacks, and for
Alaska. Evidence to hang me, to be beatify.
Clues that lead nowhere, that never connected
anyway. Deliberate obfuscation, the kind
that takes a genius. Chasms in character.
Loud omissions. Mornings that yawn above
a new grave. Pages you know exist
but you can't find them. Someone's terribly
inevitable life story, maybe mine.
At first i thought Ms.Davis wrote this, but then got to the bottom where it showed the name William Stafford as the author. After my first time reading the poem i thought it was about some crazy guy that sticks odd objects in is journal at random. Then i read it a 2nd time and I saw tha it started off talking about random things he sticks in his journal then progresses to metaphors and then winds down with a dark, almost morbid, metaphor and concludes with a gloomy statement about the status of his life.
