Poem on the ancient Mayan Civilization

Charles Portwood

Imagine a ruin so strange it must never have happened.
The most advanced Mathematicians and brilliant Astronomers of their era.
An isolated society cut off from the outside world.
They were sophisticated and skilled artists as well as ferociously fierce warriors.
Monumental architecture etched with spectacular engravings.
A culturally dynamic society ranked as one of the top in the world.
Unknown to the ancient people, the arrival of a god would mark the end of the world, as they know it.
An advanced civilization, thousands of years ahead of its time, brought to its knees.
The once thriving metropolis turned to ruble.
An entire city laid in ruin, untouched, un-restored, unrecognizable.
A solemn reminder of what was once one of the world's greatest civilizations.
Imagine a culture, a people, a society, so forgotten it must never have happened.

-I wrote a peom about the ancient mayan civilization. It was the first thing that poped up in my head when i read "Imagine a ruin so strange it must never have happened.

My question is how did a god turn this civilization into a ruin?

do you have any ideas of how those people were so smart?

Interesting route to take with this quotation.
I'm curious how you know about the mayans: why should the reader trust what you say about them?
Also, how could you include the name of the civilization into your poem so that we know who you are talking about from the beginning?

their downfall started with the visit of a european on a horse. they first thought of the white skinned creature as a god. they were eventually destroyed by the europeans.
